On January 1, 2010 Lithuania has powered down and decommissioned the Ignalina atomic energy plant’s (IAE) only remaining nuclear reactor, which supplied nearly 80% of the country’s electrical needs. Until late in 2007 very little attention was given as to what would happen in the aftermath of the shutdown except for considerable rhetoric that a new nuclear power plant would be built in the 2016-2018 timeframe. However, nothing was done to initiate any activity in this direction...
